An outdoor fireplace is the single best upgrade for a Florida backyard that already has a patio. We build them all over Tampa Bay and Citrus County, and yes, people absolutely use them here. Our "winter" is fireplace season, and a fire pit gathering in January with the grandkids is as Florida as it gets.
The short answer
A custom masonry outdoor fireplace in the Tampa Bay area typically runs $8,000 to $20,000 installed. A straightforward wood-burning fireplace with stone veneer lands around $8,000 to $12,000. Larger designs with seating walls, a raised hearth, premium stone, and gas ignition run $15,000 to $25,000+.
Those are real masonry fireplaces: concrete block core, firebrick firebox, proper chimney with cap, stone or brick veneer finish. Not a kit, not a metal box with rocks glued on.
Wood-burning vs. gas
Wood-burning is the classic choice and what most of our clients pick. Real fire, real crackle, lower build cost since there is no gas line or burner system. The tradeoff is you need firewood storage and you clean ash.
Gas costs more upfront, usually $2,000 to $4,000 extra for the burner system, gas line, and ignition, but it is push-button convenience. If you will use the fireplace three nights a week, gas pays for itself in enjoyment. If it is a few times a season, wood is the smarter money.
What drives the cost
Size of the firebox. A 36-inch firebox is the sweet spot for most backyards: big enough for real fires, not so big it dominates the patio. Going to 42 or 48 inches adds significant material and labor.
The finish. Stone veneer is the most popular and runs mid-range. Full natural stone or brick with detailed patterns costs more in labor. Stucco over block is the budget finish and looks clean on modern homes.
Seating walls and hearth extensions. Most clients add a raised hearth and flanking seat walls, and honestly it transforms the project from a fireplace into an outdoor living room. Budget $2,000 to $5,000 extra depending on length and finish.
The chimney. A proper chimney needs to clear the roofline and nearby structures for draft. Taller chimneys on two-story homes cost more. This is not a place to cut corners: bad draft means a smoky patio nobody uses.
Access. If we can get equipment and materials to the backyard easily, the job goes fast. Tight side yards, slopes, and pool cages that need panel removal all add time.
Permits in Florida
Most municipalities in Tampa Bay and Citrus County require a permit for a masonry fireplace. It is a straightforward process, and we handle it as part of the job. Setback rules vary: generally the fireplace needs to sit a minimum distance from the house, property lines, and pool enclosures. We verify all of this at estimate time so there are no surprises.
How long does it take?
A standard outdoor fireplace takes two to three weeks from footing to final cap. Larger projects with seat walls and outdoor kitchen tie-ins run three to five weeks. We schedule around Florida's rainy season because mortar and downpours do not mix.
Wood-burning fireplace vs. fire pit: which one?
A fire pit runs $2,500 to $6,000 and is great for casual use. A fireplace costs more but gives you a focal point, blocks wind, throws heat in one direction where people actually sit, and adds more to the home's value. If the budget allows, the fireplace wins every time. If it does not, a well-built fire pit with seat walls is no consolation prize.
The bottom line
Budget $8,000 to $20,000 for a real masonry fireplace, decide wood vs. gas based on how often you will actually use it, and do not skip the seating walls. Then enjoy every cool Florida evening for the next twenty years.
